Using Your Thai Driving License Abroad
A Thai license is handy for trips around Southeast Asia, where the ASEAN agreement covers it. Further away you usually need an International Driving Permit, and the DLT only issues that to holders of the 5-year license.
Within ASEAN: The 1985 Agreement
In 1985 the ASEAN countries agreed to recognise each other's domestic driving licenses. In practice this means a Thai license is generally accepted for visits to:
- Brunei
- Cambodia
- Indonesia
- Laos
- Malaysia
- Myanmar
- Philippines
- Singapore
- Vietnam
What helps: the current Thai smart card shows your name, license class and dates in English, so police and rental desks can read it. Older cards without English are a weak point.
Where It Gets Less Simple
- The vehicle class still counts. A Thai car license does not let you ride a motorbike in Vietnam or Bali, just as it does not in Phuket.
- Rental companies and insurers set their own rules. Some ask for an International Driving Permit even where the police would accept your card. Ask before you book.
- Living there is different from visiting. The agreement is about visits. If you move to another ASEAN country, its own rules for residents apply.
- Enforcement varies. How a checkpoint officer reads the agreement is not always how it is written. Carry your passport and a copy of the license along with the card.
Outside ASEAN: The Thai International Driving Permit
For Europe, the US, Australia or Japan you usually need an International Driving Permit together with your Thai card. The DLT issues two versions:
| Permit | Valid for |
|---|---|
| Geneva Convention 1949 | 1 year |
| Vienna Convention 1968 | Up to 3 years, never longer than your Thai license |
Which one you need depends on the country you visit. The important catch for foreigners: the DLT issues the permit only to holders of the 5-year Thai license. With the 2-year license you have to wait for the upgrade. The renewal guide explains when and with which visa the 5-year license is possible.
Back Home: Keep Your Original License
The Thai license does not replace your license from home. Keep it valid and renew it when it runs out. If you move back after years in Thailand, your home authority decides whether it exchanges a Thai license, and many countries ask for a test. Converting your home license here is easier the other way round; see our conversion guide.
