The DLT Driving Test: 4 Physical Tests Explained
If you convert a valid foreign license, you do not take a theory or road test at the DLT. You take four short physical tests on machines. Here is what each one checks and what you do.
The 4 Tests at the DLT
All four take about 15 minutes together. You do them one after the other at the same station.
Colour Vision
You name the colours you are shown, such as the red, yellow and green of traffic lights.
Reaction Time
You sit at a pedal machine with your foot on the accelerator. When the light changes from green to red, you move your foot to the brake as fast as you can. You need to be under 0.75 seconds.
Depth Perception
Inside a box are two poles. With a control you move one pole until it stands level with the other. Take your time and adjust in small steps.
Peripheral Vision
You look straight ahead at a point while lights flash to your left and right, and you say which colour you see. Keep your head still.
On the Day
- If you need glasses or contact lenses for driving, wear them.
- Sleep well the night before. The reaction test is the one most people worry about, and being rested helps.

No Foreign License?
If you have never held a driving license, the DLT process is longer. On top of the 4 physical tests there is a training video at the DLT, a 50-question computer theory test and a practical test on the DLT course. Before the Tests
