Thai Driving License Expired? What to Do
How long your license has been expired decides what the DLT asks for: a normal renewal, an extra theory test, or a fresh application. The clock runs from the date on the card, also while you are out of the country.
What the DLT Asks For, by Time Expired
| Expired for | What you do at the DLT |
|---|---|
| Less than 1 year | Renew as usual: the 4 physical tests and a 1-hour road safety training (online or at the office) |
| 1 to 3 years | The 4 physical tests, a longer training of about 2 hours and the theory test (50 questions, 45 correct to pass) |
| More than 3 years | A new application: training, physical tests, theory test and practical test. You start again with a 2-year license. |
The 4 physical tests are the same ones as for a first license: colour vision, reaction time, depth perception and peripheral vision. See the 4 DLT tests. The rules and a practice quiz for the theory test are in our theory test guide.
If It Expired While You Were Abroad
This is the most common way people end up with an expired card. The DLT does not make an exception for time spent outside Thailand, and you cannot renew from abroad, because the tests and the photo happen at the counter.
- Back within a year of the expiry date: book your renewal soon after you land. You keep the simple route.
- The 1-year mark is close: every week counts. Once you pass it, the theory test is added.
- Leaving for a long trip: renew before you go. You can do it in the 3 months before the expiry date.
What to Bring
- Your expired Thai license (if it is lost as well, see lost Thai license)
- Passport with your current visa or entry stamp
- Certificate of Residence from Phuket Immigration, or a valid work permit with your address. See the residence certificate guide.
- Medical certificate not older than 30 days. See the medical certificate guide.
Which validity you get afterwards depends on your visa and on whether the old card was a 2-year or a 5-year license. The visa overview shows who can hold the 5-year license.
Driving in the Meantime
An expired card counts as no license. At a checkpoint you are fined like someone without a license, and after an accident your insurer can refuse to pay. If you were away for a while, sort the renewal out before you rent a scooter. More on this in our scooter rental and insurance guide.
