🇫🇷 French Licenses in Thailand: Official DLT Rules
Phuket is home to a large French community, especially in the south of the island (Rawai, Nai Harn and Chalong). Many French residents and tourists are unaware of the actual rules of the Department of Land Transport (DLT) and risk heavy fines and insurance refusals.
Under Section 42 of the Thai Motor Vehicle Act (B.E. 2522), the holder of a valid French driving license can obtain a Thai driving license directly, without retaking the theory or practical driving exam.
In France, the car license (Permis B) plus the 7-hour training certificate allows riding 125cc two-wheelers.
- This rule is exclusively French and is not accepted by Thai police or courts.
- In Thailand, every scooter (Honda Click 125, PCX 160, Forza 350) requires a real motorcycle license (Category A).
- After an accident, your travel or expat insurance (Allianz, AXA, CFE, April) will refuse to cover hospital costs if you only held a Permis B.
Category Equivalence: French License vs. Thai License
In Thailand, car and motorcycle licenses are two separate physical documents. If you hold both categories, both cards are issued in one go.
