🇩🇪 German, Austrian & Swiss Licenses in Thailand: Legal Basis & DLT Rules
Tourists, DTV digital nomads and expats from Germany, Austria and Switzerland can rely on a clear legal framework at the Thai Department of Land Transport (DLT).
Under Section 42 of the Thai Motor Vehicle Act (B.E. 2522), valid national driving licenses from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are recognized and can be converted into a Thai driving license without a practical driving test and without the computer theory exam.
In Germany, key number B196 or the old Class 3 license allows riding light motorcycles up to 125cc. This national exception does not apply in Thailand.
- Riding a scooter in Phuket without motorcycle category A/A2 on your license means you are riding unlicensed under Thai law.
- After an accident, European travel health insurers and Thai insurers refuse to pay immediately (hospital bills often reach €30,000–80,000).
- Police checkpoints in Chalong, Patong and Rawai issue daily fines of 500 to 1,000 THB.

FAQ: German, Austrian & Swiss Licenses in Phuket
Yes, without any problem. The DTV (valid for 5 years, 180 days per entry) is fully recognized by the DLT. Like all foreigners, you first receive the 2-year temporary license. On the DTV you can later get another 2-year license, but not the 5-year license.
If you present a valid International Driving Permit (valid for 3 years under the 1968 Vienna Convention) together with your national card, no separate translation is usually required. If you only have your national card, we arrange confirmation through the German Honorary Consul in Phuket or a certified translation.
The tests take about 15 minutes in total: 1) color recognition (naming red, yellow and green on a traffic light); 2) brake test (press the accelerator and hit the brake within 0.75 seconds when the red light appears); 3) depth perception (align two rods at the same level using buttons); 4) peripheral vision (recognizing colors from the corner of your eye). Our guide explains every test to you in German beforehand.
